Dao De Jing 29 – Proper way/attitude to face the world

03/27/2012
03/27/2012

When one attempts to manipulate the world, I see him fails.

The world is holy, it cannot be manipulated, whose attempt to manipulate it, fail; whose attempt to rule it, lost it.

-> The world is a consequence of a multitude of factors, both within and without.  How can one’s limited self, with all its bias-preconception-illusion, accurately sees and runs the world?

Since things may lead or follow; be warm or cold; be strong or weak; be upright or fall.

-> The moon gets brighter and then dark; stock market goes up and down; empire becomes powerful and then fall, and same applies to a person, an organization, a society, and a civilization.

Therefore sages let go of (man-made) extreme, luxury, and excess.

-> Knowing the world runs in its own rhythm.  Sages surrender the desire to manipulate extreme, luxury, and excess, and abide is reality beyond these changes.

Chapter 29 Discussion:

How to face the world?  Stop trying to manipulate, follow the flow, Laozi suggested.  But how about my health, my family, and my career?  Do i not need to manipulate to keep them going?  Instead of manipulation, which implies forcefulness and control, one can approach the tasks like water: with humility and responsibility (see also DDJ8 – Dao is like Water).  Knowing despite of our best effort, things might not work out in ways we like to see (sometimes it gets better), nevertheless we accept our role and do it with our best ability.  When we have done so, we feel peace in the process irrespective of the outcome; we are beyond our expectation, we are in peace.  So Laozi said, let go of our excess arrogance and expectations, and do our best in the flow.

Dao De Jing 27 – Interdependency of Sage vs. Layman

03/13/2012
03/13/2012

Those who master travelling leave no trace,

-> When one has been to, and is everywhere, one cannot be traced or described by a particular trace.

Those who master talking speaks no fault;

-> They communicate perfectly and completely and therefore left no fault.

Those who master counting need no tool;

-> All is known and there is no need to count or record.

Those who master locking need no extra shuts; those who master tying needs no rope.

-> Job is done perfectly without extra and unnecessary measures.

Sages master saving people, and therefore no one is unsaved; (Sages) master saving thing, and therefore nothing is unsaved. This is called inner-wisdom.

-> When Sage embrace everything completely, there is nothing left out and unsaved.

Therefore Sage is the teacher of the layman; layman is the asset of the Sage.

-> Sage embrace and treasure all impartially, including the layman and those labelled undesirable.

When teacher is not respected, or asset not treasured, one falls into great confusion despite of being intelligent. This is key.

-> When one still have bias in receiving certain people (whether sage or layman) or situation, one is still in the dualistic separation of a self and others, and therefore is away from the reality of oneness and nonduality.

Chapter 27 Discussion:

Instead of labeling people as good or bad, sage or layman, Laozi recommended embracing all, and treasuring all without personal bias.  When one does this, every people and situation can be seen as blessings to cultivate one self, is welcomed and treasured, for they provide opportunity to test what’s left in personal bias, and opportunity to cultivate awareness and compassion.  Gradually ones acceptance and compassion will grow and eventually to encompass all. Gratitude (described as treasure by Laozi) therefore, is an useful attitude in cultivation and to face life.

Dao De Jing 26 – Fallacy of lightness

03/06/2012
03/06/2012

Weight is the root of lightness, stillness is the ruler of recklessness.

-> In the phenomenal world, weight anchors lightness.  In the spiritual world, stillness (in and of the center) persists over recklessness.

Therefore the Sage at all times stay centered at the weighted wagon.

Although in luxury and glamour, (he) remain transcended and nonattached.

-> Seeing the temporariness of phenomena, Sages identified him/herself as the center that give rise to the changing world.

How could the lord of the world rule with a lightness?

-> lightness here means not knowing the center, and attached to the changing.  How can someone who does not know its center rule his/her life?

Lightness will cost one’s foundation, recklessness will cost one’s lordship.

-> When we follow our attachments, we are led away from the center.  When we are away from the center, we lost our foundation.  Like tree without root but attempts to rule the entire tree, we become reckless and lost our true lordship and mastership.

Chapter 26 discussion:

We often describe spiritual masters as being grounded.  At where do they ground themselves to?  Laozi suggests grounding to the center.  When we realize our identity beyond, and underneath the changing body-mind-self, we realize our deeper identity as the non-personal witness-consciousness-awareness-Self, which is the stable reality underneath and beyond the changing phenomena.  When we realized this, we will not be confused by the lightness of the peripheral, and will know our everlasting home in midst of the changing phenomenal world.
