Confucius Analects – Hearsay Information

04/09/2013

17.4 Exercise caution against hearsay information

子曰、道聽而塗說、德之棄也。

The Master said, ‘To tell, as we go along, what we have heard on the way, is to cast away our virtue.’

* * *

When we hear about something that we do not directly experience, and spread the information without verifying the validity of it, we are spreading hearsay information.

What is wrong about spreading hearsay information?  When we spread the words about something that we are not sure is true or not, we are potentially spreading rumor that does not exist in the first place, and easily become vehicle for unknown interest and propaganda.  Look at the celebrity news, before we get all stirred up in the stories, how accurate are they representing reality if we look at their track record?

For seekers of truth, we need to establish ourselves and our practices on a firm ground of verified truth, like those shared my authentic teachers and masters, and to keep a cautious mind against unverified information.  This is why Confucius suggested us to be cautious against hearsay information.

Dao De Jing 40 – Dao moves in reverse direction

05/08/2012
05/08/2012

The Dao moves in reverse direction; and runs through those humble.

-> Ordinary people invest their energy in their “self”, which claim credits from reality about what is happening.  The process reverses when we surrender attachment to our selves, and align our live to the universal Dao.  When this process starts, Dao starts to move and run in our live.

Things born out of manifest, manifest born out of unmanifest.

-> From unconscious arises consciousness (the waking up of the “self”), from consciousness arises the perception of the entire world.

Discussion of Ch40:

When we align our intention to Dao or to Truth, the entire universe starts to guide us towards it.  The less we are addicted to our selves, the more humble we are, and better the Dao can run through us.

As we start to pay attention to our “self”, we begin to see the nature of it, including how it arises, and how it relates to the perceptive world.  Then we are in position to continue its dominance or to reverse the process through surrender.

  • Dao De Jing 14 – Formless and timeless nature of the Dao

Dao De Jing 14 – Formless and timeless nature of the Dao

02/07/2012
02/07/2012

Look but could not see, is called ‘Yi’; Listen but could not hear, is called ‘Xi’; Grasp but could not get, is called ‘Wei’. These three qualities alone could not provide an accurate description (of the Dao), therefore we blend them together as one.

-> The Dao cannot be seen, cannot be heard, cannot be touched.

Its upper part is not bright, its lower part is not obscure. Ceaseless and cannot be named, it goes back to nothingness.

-> It is neither bright nor obscure, beyond name and form.

This is the formless form, non-thing phenomenon, this is between seems and seem-not. We meet it and do not see its front, we follow it and do not see its back.

-> It exists even at the condition of no form/thing, and therefore beyond descriptions of even seems and seem-not. It is all around and within us, yet no one (self) can perceive it.

Align with this ancient way, to master today’s things. At one with the origin since ancient, is the nature of the Dao.

-> This has been the case since the beginning of all, if we can realized it, we can arrive mastery (of things and the self).

* * *

Chapter 14 Discussion:

Is the Dao playing hide and seek with us?  How come it is here yet we cannot perceive it?  The reason is that it cannot be found with the “self”, which is separate and dualistic in nature, for Dao is beyond separation and duality.  The more the “self” tried to find the “Dao”, the further away it is from it, like a cat chasing its own tail.  However, when we go beyond the “self”, and abide in this Dao, where all arises from and flows with, we find our origin, we find the center, we find truth, and everlasting peace.

Zhang San Feng – The Internal Alchemist

Besides being a master martial artist, Zhang San Feng is also a master in Daoist Internal Alchemy.  In his treaty “Speaking of the Dao in plain words”, Zhang San Feng provides a brief yet clear overview of the pathway of Dao cultivation via meditation and Internal Alchemy.

He discusses the general outline of different stages of Daoist cultivation, structure of the human essence-energy-spirit system, important explanation on key concepts such as truth, nature, spirit, mind, foundation practices in breathing and meditation, and barriers and useful attitudes to facilitate the practice.

As the master said, practice proceeded blindly leads one to go nowhere (section 16).  This article therefore helps practitioner to focus their efforts on the core and direct pathway towards the Dao.
