The Heart Sutra

  • The Heart Sutra

Chinese to English translation by LI siming, 2011.

Overview:

One of the most popular spiritual text among the Chinese populace, this short yet brief Sutra describes the advance state of enlightened awareness. In such state, differentiation between form and non-form disappear, as well as the appearance of other 4 skandhas (feeling, thinking, acting, consciousness) as independently existed reality. The Sutra describes that reality is beyond common conception of changes. In the awareness of this reality, one is beyond the temporary and changing perceptions, and therefore beyond living and dying, suffering and liberating. One is so beyond the temporary and changing that there is no more inverted perceptions and therefore beyond any form of hindrance. Such is the state of spiritual enlightenment.

The Heart Sutra

Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva while practicing deep perfection of wisdom
Perceived all five skandhas were empty and was saved from all suffering and distress
(form, feeling, thinking, actions, consciousness)

色即是空, 空即是色;
Shariputra:
Form is no different from emptiness, emptiness is no different from form
Form is emptiness,emptiness is form;
Feelings, thinkings, actions, consciousness, the same is true of these

Shariputra: all dharmas are marked with emptiness
(They) do not appear or disappear, are not tainted or pure, do not increase or decrease

Therefore in emptiness there is no form, no feelings, mentations, actions, consciousness
no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind
no color, sound, smell, taste, touch, object of mind
no realm of eyes and so forth until no realm of mind consciousness

no ignorance and also no extinction of ignorance, and no aging and dying and no extinction of aging and dying
no suffering, origination of suffering, stopping of suffering, pathways to the stopping of suffering
no wisdom and also no attainment, because there is nothing to attain

the Bodhisattva depends upon Prajna Paramita
his mind has hindrance
without any hindrance no fear exists
far apart from every inverted view
dwells in Nirvana

All Buddhas in the Three Worlds
depend on Prajna Paramita
and attain complete unsurpassed enlightenment

Therefore know the Prajna Paramita
is the great transcendent mantra
is the great bright mantra
is the utmost mantra
is the supreme mantra
which is able to relieve all suffering, and is true and not false

so proclaim the Prajna Paramita mantra
proclaim the mantra that says
gone,gone, gone beyond
gone all the way beyond, Bodhisattva!
